I work in a variety of media basically because I love challenge and opportunity. In the paintings I work to express ideas, concepts, metaphors, feelings, or experiences I've had these last amazing 50 years on earth. Sometimes they are dark (about suffering, fear, disappointment, or pain); sometimes they are light (about freedom from suffering, fear, or pain); sometimes they are just about the journey (anticipation, ideals, surprises, seeing the unseen, the mystery, God, self, other). The work is about initiating a conversation with the viewer. I expect you to have a conversation with the work, whether it be with me, with yourself, or with others. In the mosaics and sculptures it is more about the materials: the challenge of technical execution, the invention required, the beauty of the substances. There are so many decisions to be made with the materials. Most often it's simply about the "feast for the eyes" of it all. But it's also extremely tactile and physical, both in the making and in the possessing. And finally, mosaics are about taking broken things--sometimes intentionally breaking whole things--and working them together to make something wholly different and beautiful and whole. Very metaphorical. The story of my life! I hope--I pray--that in my work you might find a point of connection to your own experience. It's not about me exposing me so that you might see me. I'm hoping that in my work you can see something meaningful for you, or perhaps something of "you" directly. And I hope you see truth. Thank you for looking at my work, and God be with you.
